Today I am honored to host the lovely Roseanna White with her new novel, An Hour Spent.  Here’s a synopsis: As 1915 England plunges ever deeper into war, the work of an ingenious clockmaker may give England an unbeatable military edge—and Germany realizes it as well. Evelina’s father soon finds his whole family in danger—and it may just take a reformed thief to steal the time they need to escape it.

How to Steal an Hour

Sure, we could all use an extra hour now and then. And we might try to squeeze one in here and there. But let’s face it—time isn’t something we can just take, right?

But let’s say you’re the big brother of a very special family. A family of former street-urchins that decided to stick together. Let’s say that in the past you’ve had to steal to get by, and to keep food in the bellies of the little ones you’ve taken in. Let’s say you’ve turned over a new leaf…but that doesn’t mean you stop having fun, right? Those sisters of yours—they’re still out to give you a headache and make you prove yourself.

That’s probably why the sister most set on making your head pound decides to issue you a particularly ridiculous challenge: to steal an hour. But not just any hour. An hour from Big Ben’s clock.

Anyone else might laugh her off, but you? You never could turn down a challenge. So, how do you steal an hour from the most recognizable clock in the world while the Great War is raging all around you?

First, you’d better make friends with a clockmaker. But not just any clockmaker. You need the one in charge of maintaining the clock in question. Lucky for you, your annoying sister got the idea for her challenge because she heard you saying you had to go meet this man anyway.

If said clockmaker happens to have a beautiful daughter, that doesn’t hurt. Though it might not exactly help, either. Distraction, thy name is Evelina! A girl with an independent streak a mile wide. Just the kind you’ve fostered in your sisters.

Next, you have to win that clockmaker’s confidence. And, since you still have to earn a paycheck, it’s probably a good idea to actually get the information from him that your boss wants. That is, after all, what led you to his door to begin with.

You’re probably going to forget about the challenge for a while. Things like weapons development and, yes, the pretty girl will take an awful lot of your attention.

And when zeppelins start dropping bombs over your city…yeah. Your sister’s challenge doesn’t seem really important.

But eventually, you’ll remember. And eventually, the government will decide to help you out. Nice of them, right? They decide, you see, that farmers could really use an extra hour of daylight, and that fuel and electricity could be saved, too, if the clocks were just adjusted.

So what do you know? Someone does get to steal an hour from the Great Westminster Clock. And so…it might as well be you.

Roseanna M. White is a bestselling, Christy Award nominated author who has long claimed that words are the air she breathes. When not writing fiction, she’s homeschooling her two kids, editing, designing book covers, and pretending her house will clean itself. Roseanna is the author of a slew of historical novels that span several continents and thousands of years. Spies and war and mayhem always seem to find their way into her books…to offset her real life, which is blessedly ordinary. You can learn more about her and her stories at www.RoseannaMWhite.com
